GROW! "Grow your own" for Kids and MORE

Emma Goodwin

A summary
I encourage youngsters to get involved, cooperate, to have a go. Growing your own food is arguably one of the most important things we can do.
We have fun as we learn and talk a lot about the planet, the soil, the stars and celestial bodies, also the effect we humans have on the earth and our responsibility to care for it, and how best to do so.
Using only hand tools and no-dig growing techniques we focus on Natural Farming, Biodynamics and Permaculture principles.
I give a little 10 minute talk with diagrams on a big white board to explain what we're going to do, and why we're going to do it, before we get stuck in.
Each session includes hands on gardening experience:, which may be sowing, hoeing, transplanting, tending, propagating, pruning, feeding the soil, protecting crops from pests and diseases, making compost.
.
We observe the cycles of nature, the solstices and equinoxes, the cross quarter festivals. We learn about planting by the moon and plug into source as we get our hands well and truly dirty. I offer soup, bread and cheese for lunch and we pick salads and fruits from the garden when in season.
The Crossing Community Supported Agriculture Scheme in Forest Row (see map below). Is a working market garden supplying veg boxes to Forest Row villagers.
Parents may stay and join in, there are often excess plants for the children to take home and plant elsewhere. Parents can also leave their children. We are DBS checked and there are two adults on site at any given time.
I am a Certified GAPS Coach, member of The Small Farm Training Group and The Land Worker's Alliance. The Crossing is a demonstration site for the Brighton Permaculture Trust for their Permaculture Design Courses.

I have been growing fruit and veg since 2003, starting off on an allotment in London. I inspire and educate many parents about the GAPS nutritional protocol that uses food as medicine, healing and sealing leaky gut which can manifest in any autoimmune condition or chronic inflammatory disease. Picky eating is usually one of the first symptoms, real food is the answer. I began to supply fruit and veg professionally in 2009 at Hoathly Hill Community Supported Agriculture scheme, where I learn about Biodynamics and became a Demeter Certified grower. In 2012 we opened up an acre of ground at The Crossing, in Forest Row to begin a horticultural enterprise supplying veg boxes to locals in the village. They say "you're closer God's heart in a garden than any where else on earth" and whilst I have no religious affiliation, I believe this means you're closer to finding divine connections when working with source, on mother earth, in the elements, under father sky. It is my passion to teach people how very easy it can be to grow your own. I aim to dispel the fears surrounding our food systems and inspire our children to realise what abundance is possible when we work WITH nature.
