What we'll do
The camp will be delivered in a very fun and play friendly way, with the emphasis being less about natural ability and skill, but more about fun, active, social interaction in a supportive, inclusive, low pressure environment. And the setting we have is amazing! We will have a large variety of games focusing on the movements involved in swinging, putting, and chipping, while also incorporating elements of walking, running, jumping, and agility, as well as balance and co-ordination amongst others. The children can also participate in structured warm-up and cool-down exercises. The set up will be broad and varied thanks to a huge array of specialised equipment which will provide variety and cater to different interests and abilities. A lot of the games and challenges we do are in teams (like relays) so it encourages good team spirit and making positive relationships with one another as well as building self-confidence. If children prefer not to use a golf club they will always have the option of just rolling, throwing and catching during the activities, or even assisting as a facilitator. Basically whatever they are comfortable with and makes them feel good! Team building and co-operation will play a big part as the kids help each other out with a route to the hole or lining up shots, fetching balls, distributing and organising equipment for the activities. Besides physical activities children will have the opportunity to draw/design some golf hole layouts, create their own scorecards for the following day’s activities, and get creative by coming up with their own fun games. They will employ numerical skills too for adding points up and keeping score if they want bring an element of competition into it. There will also be educational games and quizzes to reinforce learning about golf rules and etiquette (using a booklet with cartoon aids) which serve in real life too, not just in golf. Positive behaviours will be fostered through this approach, including the encouragement of resilience and positive self-talk, and by our staff acting as positive role models. We will also engage and educate the children on the importance of green spaces , recycling, and ‘letting the course be wild’ in order to appreciate the natural beauty of the environment. Given our wonderful setting we may have the opportunity to do litter picking and ‘repairing our divots’ if we disturb the turf. We will deliver awareness of healthy eating through menu discussions (in collaboration with Surplus to Supper) and also leverage mentors' knowledge of nutrition in sports. We will promote healthy lifestyles by linking physical activity to well-being (physical and mental), also emphasizing hydration and sun safety. . Finally, one of the principal reasons for running this programme is so that kids benefit, like our mentors have through the years, from the mental and social attributes of the game. We know first-hand how it helps develop and hone lifelong skills such as patience, discipline, perseverance, camaraderie, respect, honesty and integrity.
