About your mentor
Wild Roots IW CIC
Connecting children and families in the wild.
At Wild Roots IW CIC we have a deep sense of respect and gratitude for the land, the animals and the people who come and join us at the beautiful Moorhills Farm. Our mission is to strengthen children and families by immersing them in nature, teaching traditional skills, and applying trauma-informed therapeutic practices that support healing, growth, and relational connection. Led by qualified teachers, bushcraft instructors and trauma informed practitioners, we provide a rich and holistic offer for a wide range of ages. You can expect to spend lots of time therapeutically with our animals, gardening, fire lighting, stream crossing, hammock relaxing, shelter building, cooking and much more!
FAQ'S
1. What is bushcraft? Bushcraft is the practice of traditional outdoor skills such as fire lighting, shelter building, tool use, tracking, plant knowledge, and nature awareness. It develops confidence, resilience, teamwork, and connection to the natural world. 2. Is it safe? Yes. Safety is our highest priority. All activities are risk-assessed, and children are taught how to use tools and fire responsibly under close supervision. Learning to manage risk safely is part of building confidence and competence. 3. What ages can attend? At Wild Roots, we offer sessions for children and families across a range of ages. Our holiday ‘Go Wild’ is specifically for ages 6-12 years old. 4. What does a typical session look like? Sessions may include: Fire lighting and campfire cooking Shelter building Knife skills (age appropriate) Nature crafts Tracking and wildlife awareness Games that build teamwork and resilience Reflection or circle time Each session balances skill-building, free exploration, and relational connection. 5. What does “trauma-informed” mean in your setting? Being trauma-informed means we: Prioritise emotional and physical safety Build predictable routines Offer choice and autonomy Focus on strengths, not deficits Support regulation through nature-based practices We understand that some children may have experienced adversity, and we respond with sensitivity, consistency, and compassion. 6. Do children need prior outdoor experience? No experience is needed. All skills are taught from the ground up in a supportive, encouraging environment. 7. What should participants wear? Weather-appropriate outdoor clothing Spare clothes if children would prefer to change at some point in the day Waterproof layers Sturdy footwear (wellies or boots) We operate in most weather conditions — being outdoors in different elements is part of the experience. 8. What happens in bad weather? We embrace seasonal weather and adapt activities accordingly. In extreme conditions (high winds or safety concerns), sessions may be modified or postponed. 9. Are parents required to stay? This depends on the program. Family sessions are designed for shared participation. Child-only sessions such a ‘Go Wild’ are drop-off only. 10. How does bushcraft benefit children and families? Bushcraft supports: Confidence and independence Emotional regulation Communication skills Resilience and problem-solving Stronger family bonds A sense of belonging and connection Nature provides a powerful environment for healing and growth. 11. Is this therapy? Our approach is trauma-informed and therapeutic in nature, but we are not a replacement for clinical therapy, unless explicitly stated. Our programs support wellbeing, connection, and resilience through experiential learning in nature.
Waiver and Indemnity
Wild Roots IW CIC Disclaimer, Parental Responsibility Waiver & Indemnity (UK) Go Wild sessions and activities take place in a natural environment and involve managed risk, which is a core and valuable element of Bushcraft practice. While all reasonable precautions are taken, not all risks can be eliminated. By allowing a child to participate, parents/carers acknowledge and accept the following: 1.
