What we'll do
A weekly (term time only) self defence & personal safety lesson aimed at teens, covering how to enjoy all of life's opportunities whilst taking responsibility for their personal safety. This workshop is specifically aimed at teenagers (aged 12 - 16). We will discuss scenarios that are most relevant to this age group e.g. being independent in the local community and further afield. The lessons will be predominantly focused on physical self defence skills, and will also include: 1. The fundamental principles of personal safety (awareness, avoidance, dialogue & action) 2. The law in relation to self defence and your legal rights. 3. Your physiological response when faced with a threat, how this impacts your ability to respond and how to manage these physiological and emotional responses in order to overcome the threat. 4. What situational awareness is, how it can be improved and how to reduce the risk of being viewed as a 'target', including how to adopt positive body language and use your voice effectively. 5. The importance of mindset when faced with a threat and how to develop a survival mindset. 6. Physical self defence skills that are realistic and effective for all levels of ability in situations of high emotional distress.
About your mentor
Annabel at Actively Safe
Self defence and personal safety trainer
Hi, I'm Annabel, founder of Actively Safe. As a parent myself I want what is best for my children, and I consider their safety to be a fundamental priority. As our children become more independent and leave the relatively sheltered environment of home and school, where they can explore boundaries and make mistakes, it is important that they have the required life skills to effectively manage their safety. Martial arts has always been an important part of my life. As a teenager, I regularly kick boxed. For the last 6 years I have been focusing on training in an Indonesian Silat, and in recent years Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Krav Maga. Through training in martial arts I began to develop an understanding of what would and wouldn't 'work in real life' situations. This led me to study and qualify with the National Federation of Personal Safety, gaining my Level 3 self defence instructors qualification. These days, I am really lucky to work with a range of people, from children, to teenagers and adults, addressing issues that they consider important to their personal safety. Whether it be safety concerns about having to travel for work or lone working; walking the dog; or the risks that come with peer pressure and bullying. I love working with people and seeing their self confidence grow. I strongly believe that life is for living to the full and making the most of opportunities. I personally love to travel and explore new places and cultures. I do not believe in constantly being on edge and worrying about what may/may not happen. Personal safety is about believing that you are worth keeping safe, and being prepared not paranoid.
