What we'll do
Please note that a maximum of 2 adults and 4 siblings may attend. Transport to the museum is not provided. Experience Beneath the Waves at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum – a playful, sensory-rich exhibition designed for young children and their families. Through calming, play-based experiences inspired by the wonders of the ocean, families can explore together in a welcoming environment that supports different sensory and learning needs. Museums can be wonderful places for children with SEND to discover, play and connect. Accessible, sensory-friendly exhibitions like Beneath the Waves create opportunities for exploration at each child's own pace, helping to build confidence, communication, creativity and motor skills. By removing barriers to participation, these playful spaces enable families to enjoy meaningful cultural experiences together while nurturing curiosity about the natural world and inspiring a lifelong love of learning. Please note that the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum is closed to the public on Mondays, so access to the building will be slightly different from a normal visit. When you arrive, please make your way to the entrance on Bayley Lane, which leads into the café and shop area. A member of our team will be there to welcome you and provide access to the museum. As families may arrive at different times, there may be occasions when staff are not immediately at the entrance. If this happens, please call the Duty Manager on 07526 484585 and someone will come to assist you. Once inside, you will be guided to our Beneath the Waves experience. This is a relaxed, open-ended play space designed to support exploration, creativity and sensory engagement, making it particularly enjoyable for many children with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Families are welcome to spend as much time in the space as feels comfortable for them. A quiet breakout area will also be available alongside the experience. This space can be used for craft activities, taking a break, or simply having some time to reset if needed. Each adult and child will receive a voucher to use in the museum café for lunch during their visit. The session finishes at 1:30pm. As the museum is closed to the public on Mondays, all visitors will need to leave the building at this time. As part of your visit, your family will also receive a free annual museum pass, giving you unlimited access to the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum for the next 12 months, so you can return and enjoy future visits throughout the year.
