What we'll do
At Deben Community Farm we work with the student, referrer, and family/carers to provide a stable, consistent setting where every student can feel emotionally and physically safe and valued, and where they can progress at their own pace. Our staffing team work to provide a pathway to progression for the students. We listen to, nurture, and guide them to where they want to be. This could be transitioning into school or college. We will challenge them and stretch their comfort bubble slowly and appropriately. The structure we provide is framed by the staff as role models, who encourage, guide, and support the student to meet their needs on a daily basis. Students can build on their interests, creativity and natural talents, and learn life skills such as how to problem solve, plan ahead and express themselves. Our learning-by-doing approach and focus on the process, not the outcome, means we can build self-esteem by celebrating every success relevant to the student.

About your mentor
Deben Community Farm
Our nurturing farm where everyone is valued
We are a not for profit small community farm in Saddlemakers Lane. We have a variety of animals including a highland cow, pigmy goats, rare breed Oxford Sandy and Black pigs, alpacas, Southdown sheep, hens, ponies and donkeys. Heather, David and I are the directors and we run the farm completely on a volunteer basis. We employ 5 part time staff and 1 apprentice to support the Co-Worker and Home Education groups which we run mid week to support young people who are not in full time main stream education. We offer the local Pre-school free use of the farm 3 days a week so that the children aged 3 to 5 years can access free forest explorer sessions. We are open to the public free of charge on a Sunday afternoon and also support the local children and young people with volunteering opportunities to enable them to complete their Duke of Edinburgh awards and various Guild and Scout badges. We run a free gardening group for older people. We also support Pitstop Holiday Club by giving them free access to the farm to run a holiday club during the school holidays. This was inspected in 2019 and was awarded an outstanding Ofsted.
