A summary
The education workshops are a series of educational sessions offered by Adoption East Midlands to support adoptive parents in navigating their children’s educational journeys. These workshops are specifically designed to empower adoptive parents with practical strategies and insights to effectively communicate and build strong relationships with school staff. Building Communication and Relationships: An Adopter's Story - This particular session centres around real-life experiences shared by adopters, offering a grounded and empathetic perspective on how to navigate school systems effectively. The workshop does not cover EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans), but instead focuses on relational and communicative strategies that can be applied universally across different educational settings. Transitions in Primary or Secondary School - These sessions designed specifically for adoptive parents to support their young person as they move through key stages in primary or secondary education. These interactive sessions provide practical guidance, trauma-informed strategies, and a collaborative space to explore the emotional and academic challenges young people may face during transitions. Parents will gain tools to advocate effectively within schools and help their young people feel secure and confident as they progress through their educational journey. Introduction to Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND) - This workshop designed to help adoptive parents understand and navigate the world of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). This session offers practical insights into how SEND may affect adopted young people, explores the support available within educational settings, and provides guidance on advocating effectively for your young person. Whether you're new to SEND or seeking to deepen your understanding, this workshop is a valuable starting point for informed and empowered parenting.

About your mentor
Adoption East Midlands
Transforming Lives Through Adoption
At Adoption East Midlands, we are committed to transforming lives through adoption. We provide compassionate, inclusive, and expert support to children and families across Derbyshire, Derby City, Nottinghamshire, and Nottingham City. By prioritising the voices of those with lived experience, we build trust, strengthen family bonds, and ensure every child finds a safe, stable, and loving home. Our mission is to empower adoptive families at every stage of their journey—before, during, and beyond adoption.
Workshop Objectives
The primary aim of the workshop is to create a collaborative and supportive space where adoptive parents can explore the unique challenges their children may face in school settings. These challenges often stem from early life experiences, which can impact a child’s ability to form relationships, regulate emotions, and engage positively in learning environments. The workshop encourages active participation, including group discussions, to help adopters share experiences and learn from one another.
