Bronze Casting Class

Ulysses de Diepold

A summary
We are going to explore bronze casting and the aim is to inspire ourselves from nature and Bronze Age artefacts to develop a small every day item. I will cover the necessary aspects of health and safety prior to leading the students into their first pour. We will explore the making of simple molds for a successful home casting experience.
I would like the students to inspire themselves from nature and we will to that effect pour shells and nuts. We will also pour one of the emblematic items of the Bronze Age: the axe!
Once familiarised with the basics of bronze casting, we will turn our attention to the design and casting of a small every day item. This will include the making of a casting model.

About your mentor
Ulysses de Diepold
Ulysses de Diepold
I have been involved with metalwork from a young age, spending a lot of time in my grandfather's workshop. I rekindled my passion after meeting a group of blacksmiths who took me under their wings. After some years of self teaching and spending time with professional blacksmiths decided to join evening classes at Plumpton College. I have now been practising blacksmithing and metalwork as a hobby for over 10 years. My professional background is healthcare related, I was an osteopath for 17 years, but I then changed career and trained as a science teacher. I am now a Biology lecturer in Brighton.
