About your mentors
Anjali Dance Company
Community, creativity, connection
Anjali Dance Company (Anjali) is an independent professional dance company of learning disabled artists working nationally and internationally. Since 1995, Anjali has been creating ambitious, high-quality performances and professional pathways that place learning disabled artists at the centre of creative leadership. For over 30 years, Anjali has been developing powerful, artistically innovative work that challenges who leads, who holds power, and whose voices shape the arts. The company is known for its rigorous artistic standards, long-term investment in learning disabled artists, and commitment to shifting structures that have historically excluded underrepresented communities. Anjali’s work is rooted in co-creation and lived experience, supporting learning-disabled artists to author, lead and define their own creative futures. Through performance, professional development and sector leadership, Anjali continues to reshape the landscape of contemporary dance and disability arts.
Sophie Stanley
Dance facilitator
Sophie trained in all varieties of Dance and Theatre Performance. She discovered the wonder of inclusive dance practice when she joined Stopgap Dance Company. She toured dance works made by people with and without disabilities around the country and the world, performing and teaching in theatres, day centres, schools and street festivals. When she met and married a Californian man she moved to the USA and joined AXIS dance company, a group that celebrates diversity in the arts, creating work with disabled, non-disabled, d/Deaf and neurodiverse performers. Sophie moved back to the UK in 2017. She now lives on a boat with her husband, daughter and their dog George. She leads dance and art activities with children, teenagers and adults at the Parasol Project in Oxford. Sophie thinks everyone on the planet should be able to access dance and creative pursuits in whatever manner they wish. Be it to diligently learn new techniques, make friends, hone an artistic voice, or any reason they choose. She is delighted to be on the Anjali team at the Oxford Open Classes.
