Taking your first steps into the world of football coaching can seem deceptively difficult to many, including me, who consider themselves lifelong fans of the sport. What should be a relatively straightforward step from knowledgeable fan to grassroots coach is easily sidetracked by confusing and conflicting advice on which badges and qualifications (e.g. EE Playmaker, UEFA C) you need and which are simply recommended.

Do you need a badge to start coaching at all?
There is no single badge you must hold before you are allowed to help out at a football session.

If you are completely new to this, the FA's EE Playmaker is a great place to start, recommended by the organisation and available across the UK despite being an FA resource. It is free, delivered online, and open to anyone aged 14 and over with no prior coaching experience needed. It suits a parent helping out at training or someone testing whether coaching is for them, rather than something a club would treat as a full qualification.
What's the minimum qualification most clubs will ask for?
As a casual helper or assistant coach, there are no set requirements, although the EE Playmaker course is recommended; however, if you're looking to make a step up and become a lead coach, most clubs will expect Introduction to Coaching Football. This is the FA's next step up from EE Playmaker, aimed at anyone aged 16 or over who is new to coaching or wants to formalise their involvement.
