What we'll do
Children will get hands on with our growing beds and our field kitchen at Oak Tree Farm and have fun by taking part in the following activities: Planting out seedlings, sowing seeds, harvesting soft fruits and vegetables for snacks and lunch. Cooking simple and tasty vegetarian food for their snacks and lunch as well as making some take home delights. They will also be exploring the farm, taking part in nature based activities such as plant identification, pond dipping and/or various outdoor nature crafts.

Grow Cook Eat is a Suffolk-based, community interest (not for profit) company focused on cultivating a love of nature, community, growing, cooking & eating in young people. OUR MISSION is to get young people excited about where their food comes from and build a strong connection with nature and the planet. OUR GOAL is to get young people to care about what they eat by giving them the confidence and inspiration to grow and cook their own food.
Example timetable
1000 arrival 1015 opening circle and ice breakers 1030 split into small groups and prepare morning snack together 1100 snack time 1115am free play and guided games/crafts 1130 farm tour and vegetable harvest. Opportunity to taste different ingredients and guess what different vegetables around the farm are. 1200 food prep and cooking on the open fire and gas stoves. Discussion around our ingredients and nutritional value of them vs more traditional ingredients 1300 communal shared lunch and discussions about food provenance and healthy eating 1330 free play/team games/nature activities/pond dipping 1400 gardening to include seed sowing, planting seedlings, watering, sowing seeds to take home 1445 closing circle and goodbyes 1500 pick up
Learning aims
Aim 1
Children will learn about what seeds they can sow at that time of year and what produce they can harvest.
Aim 3
Children will learn how to use a knife and peelers safely to prepare their snacks and lunch.
Aim 2
Children will gain skills in nature identification and be supported to forage for other wild produce that might be in season such as nettles.
Aim 4
Children will learn about healthy substitutions for recipes they already love and be encouraged to taste and experience ingredients they may not have already been aware of.
