About your mentor
East Suffolk Council
Local District Council
We have been delivering Operation Camouflage in some form since 2008. In the past three years it has developed from a one week activity to a four week activity. Organised by East Suffolk Council and the Army Welfare Service, the programme is designed to give young people from military families and those living in East Suffolk an opportunity to be active and creative over the summer holiday, while providing a safe and positive experience. In 2014, the scheme was shortlisted for the Youth Justice Award in the Children and Young People Now Awards. This category recognises the initiative that has made the biggest contribution to improving the life chances of young offenders, or those at risk of offending or reoffending. In 2019, the scheme won the Suffolk Strengthen Your Community Award at the Suffolk High Sheriff’s Awards. This category recognises initiatives that contribute to improving your local community.

Mobile Phone Policy
East Suffolk Council and the Army Welfare Service have a clear policy on allowing participants to bring mobile phones / smart watches to Operation Camouflage and this policy makes explicit reference to camera devices. Camera Mobile Phones / Digital Watches Camera mobile phones / smart watches are now the norm and a built in digital camera enables users to take high resolution pictures. These can be sent instantly to other mobile phone users or email addresses. They can also be posted on the internet or in chat rooms. There is a potential for camera mobile phones / smart watches to be misused and they can become an instrument of bullying or harassment directed against participants, staff, visitors and volunteers. While we fully acknowledge a parent’s/carer’s right to allow their child to bring a mobile phone / smart watch to Operation Camouflage, the organisers discourage participants bringing such items due to the possibility of: Bullying or harassment Photographs being taken without permission being granted Items getting lost / damaged If a participant needs to bring a phone to Operation Camouflage we ask it is left in the young person’s bag for the duration of the day. Parents/Carers are advised that East Suffolk Council and the Army Welfare Service accepts no liability for the loss or damage to mobile phones / smart watches which are brought to the activity. If a participant is found to be using their mobile during the day they will be asked to put the phone back in their bag. If a participant is seen taking photographs or video footage of other young people with a mobile phone / smart watch of other participants, staff, visitors or volunteers the participant will be asked to delete them from the phone overseen by one of the event organisers. Participants will be able to contact their parent/carers from the event organiser’s phone at any time. Should parents/carers need to contact participants during the activity, this should be done by contacting the event organisers on: 07880 080892.
