Black2Nature is hosting sessions for Visible Minority Ethnic (VME) young people during the summer holidays, offering an opportunity to connect with nature and learn about the outdoors while building mental health resilience. These sessions will run throughout the summer, meeting at 9 AM at St Pauls Learning Centre before embarking on nature excursions, returning by 4 PM. Each session includes a meal. Schedule: Tuesday 27th Aug: Chew Valley - Cooking and Nature Wednesday 28th Aug: Slimbridge WWT Thursday 29th Aug: Bristol Zoo Friday 30th Aug: Tynesfield National Trust Monday 2nd September: Avon Wildlife Trust Our program provides a safe space for children to express their feelings, discuss everyday stresses and anxieties, and confront issues like racism. About your mentor
Black2Nature
Everyone has a right to nature.
Right now, VME people are excluded from the UK countryside. Most opportunities to access the great outdoors are aimed at affluent white kids. We believe this has to change. Black2Nature fights for equal access to nature for all, a right that we believe is fundamental in the same way we all have the right to access education or health. Everybody should have the benefit of being able to go out into green or natural spaces, not just for their enjoyment but also for their mental, physical and social wellbeing. Vulnerable and disadvantaged minority ethnic children and teenagers are particularly at risk of entering foster care, prison or the mental health system. They are twice as likely as their White counterparts to be diagnosed with a mental illness through contact with the criminal justice system rather than it being picked up by their school, GP or Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). Our vision for Black2Nature is that our early intervention will get VME children, teens and families out into nature on a regular basis, increasing their resilience to physical and mental illness. We run many day events, camps for younger children and teens, built around building confidence, making friends, connecting with nature and having fun! Each camp is different. We’ve done all sorts of activities on our adventures, including bird-ringing, hiking, swimming, birdwatching, climbing, abseiling, archery, bushcraft, visiting Zoo, WWT Slimbridge and orienteering.
Extras
We provide everything completely free of charge, including transport, activities, snacks and lunch. We will have all equipment that may be needed including spare wellies and coats. We are looking to visit a range of different locations including WWT Slimbridge, Bristol Zoo & the Chew Valley.
