What we'll do
Our club focuses on cultural activities for children of African heritage. However, children of other ethnic groups interested in learning about the culture and traditions of Africa and the Caribbean are welcome to join us. We have a theme that the children are aware of, and we build our activities around it. For example, last Christmas, we focused on Christmas celebrations in the Caribbean, and the previous Easter, we explored Easter celebrations in parts of Africa. There is an exciting programme planned for the children this Easter. We will focus on activities children would do over Easter at some of the Islands in the Caribbean. We will have our own Easter Bonnet competition, which is held annually in Barbados. We copy the children in Curacao and decorate eggs. Our next visit will be to Jamaica. Instead of baking a spice bun, we will make our own hot cross bun. However, the children will sample the spice or honey bun, served in Jamaica, at Easter. Finally, we will pair a picnic and kite flying, which is always done at Easter in Trinidad and Tobago. The children design kites, and we will pack a picnic and take them to the park so they can fly them. Around our main activities, we will do arts and crafts and our Easter egg hunt. We will incorporate physical activities to promote team building, skill development, and learning about traditional cultural games. Health Education is one of the children's favourites, as we provide demonstrations and learn about cultural foods and healthy eating. The children will have fun making things, some of which they can take home, and will be allowed to develop a range of skill sets.
