A SUMMARY

I offer one-to-one study skills tutoring sessions to help young people (and adults!) organise their studies. This can include prioritising workloads, setting up revision systems, working out how to tackle essays. I also give specific help with written work; how to structure essays, how to write using formal academic language and how to proof-read. I am happy to teach students in their own homes in and around Forest Row.

I have loved History and languages from an early age thanks to my parents' stories and inspiration, and the freedom they gave me to roam Europe from my mid-teens... plus some very good teachers at school and university. I finished school with 5 x A-grade A-levels in History, French, Latin, Italian (and General Studies!) and studied (mostly) Russian History and Russian Language & Literature at the University of Nottingham (First Class with Distinction in Oral Russian). I spent many summers living with French and Italian families and exploring the wider world, and my year working and studying in Russia opened my eyes to the friendships which are possible between all cultures, however different we seem. I have a Certificate in Teaching English to Adults (CELTA) and went out to China with VSO after graduation, where I taught English Language and British History to Chinese undergraduates at a rural campus in inland China... also adding basic Mandarin to my repertoire of languages. After some years working in Central London in Marketing & Communications where I mainly wrote and proof-read marketing materials, I trained as a History teacher (PGCE Secondary History) and worked in an 11-18 school, teaching up to A-Level, until I had children of my own. Despite my world travels and academic achievements, I have learnt most about life and humanity from raising my three children! Observing their early development, supporting them in their frustrations and tending their emotional and physical bumps and bruises, plus guiding my eldest through his Academic Scholarship (CASE paper) has given me a new, more holistic perspective on learning. I have taken part in many School of Storytelling courses at Emerson College, have attended a Non-Violent Communication weekend and have participated in several women's circles. I would love to teach History to small groups, either following the National Curriculum or GCSE syllabus, or through multi-disciplinary workshops which could include story-telling, crafts, singing, cooking, language and literature.

My own academic success plus teaching experience combined with the marketing puts me in a great position to offer organisation / study / writing support for young people. I love sharing my skills with others because I know that with self-discipline, focus and the ability to structure ideas and prioritise steps towards personal goals, success is achievable!
