A summary
Vincent Dance Theatre is working with Brighton & Hove City Council to put on a Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme during the summer holidays from 14 - 18 August 2023 at The Dance Space, Brighton. 11 x free HAF places are available per day for young people aged 11 - 16 who receive benefits-related free school meals. 10 x paid for places are also available each day for the same age group. Join us for a week of dance, physical theatre and performance skills. This five-day summer school encourages you to make performance material, meet new friends, get creative and have fun. Each day will include activities like: warm up exercises, learning to stretch and strengthen muscles, taking part in movement games, learning how to partner with another dancer (transferring weight and lifting safely), how to move in unison, how to create your own movement/theatre material, using your voice in performance (i.e. singing and speaking) and learning fun VDT techniques such as moving in slow motion. Sessions are led by experienced professional dance artists. No previous dance theatre experience is necessary. All young people will be offered a nutritious lunch and a healthy snack each day. You can book the whole week as a summer school block, or you can book spaces per day if that works better for you. For more information, email holly@vincentdt.com or phone 01273 911616.
About your mentor
Vincent Dance Theatre
Moving people and making them think
Led by Artistic Director Charlotte Vincent, Vincent Dance Theatre has been moving people and making them think since 1994, producing socially-engaged dance theatre work on stage, on film and online. Vincent Dance Theatre (VDT) is working with Brighton & Hove City Council to put on a Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme during the summer holidays from 14 - 18 August 2023 at The Dance Space, Brighton. 11 x free places are available per day for young people aged 11 - 16 who receive benefits-related free school meals. 10 x paid for HAF places are also available each day for the same age group. The programme is partly funded by Arts Council England as VDT is a National Portfolio Organisation. Children and young people will be able to enjoy a programme of enriching activities, as well as have a free nutritional meal as part of the scheme. More about Vincent Dance Theatre: VDT explores the complex tensions between ‘community’ and ‘professional’ practice by researching and embedding the voices and lived experience of underrepresented community groups and individuals in each new work made. Professionals, non-professionals and young people collaborate at every stage of the creative process to create work on stage and film that is widely distributed to live and online audiences. The work is then applied in, and explored through, a wide range of participatory opportunities including: professional development, mentoring, teaching and learning, social engagement and dialogue and debate. VDT uses its public platform to provoke debate around sexual politics, equality of opportunity, trauma informed practice and social change. The company places safeguarding and a protective mindset at the heart of all its practice and operations and Vincent is a vocal advocate for improving conditions for parents and carers working in the performing arts. VDT is a National Portfolio Organisation, funded by Arts Council England and based in Brighton, UK. VDT is Associate Company at Brighton Dome. Vincent is a PhD student at Canterbury Christchurch University.
WHAT TO BRING
Young people should dress in loose fitting joggers or sports/dance leggings, a t-shirt and bring a jumper/coat as we may be eating lunch outside on days when it is not raining. Please also bring a pair of trainers. We want to make sure everyone is comfortable and able to move freely. No crop tops or jewellery to be worn as there may be some contact work. Please bring sun protection cream if it is sunny as we may be eating lunch outside. Staff will remind young people at break times to apply sun cream and help younger ones if needed. It is also a good idea to send a broad-brimmed hat that shades the face, neck and ears. Please also bring a large water bottle that can be refilled throughout the day. A healthy fruit snack and nutritious lunch will be provided for all young people each day. What shouldn’t young people bring? We strongly advise that young people don’t bring watches, computer games, ipods and similar to the summer school. There is no real use for these items and they are often mislaid. We cannot accept responsibility if these items are lost or stolen. Due to health and hygiene reasons, we are unfortunately unable to allow any birthday cakes (or any other food treats) to be brought to the summer school to be shared with the groups. The young person I am responsible for has a specific medical condition / medicine. You will have informed us at the point of booking of any medical conditions, however if there are any changes please let us know. What if the young person I am responsible for is ill or has an accident at camp? Don’t worry we are well prepared and our staff are First Aid qualified. Fortunately almost everything we have to deal with are grazes on knees. However should a young person suffer a more serious injury or fall ill, you will be contacted immediately. If your child/young person is ill on the morning of the summer school please contact us. If your child/young person has a fever / vomiting / diarrhoea we can not take them at the summer school for 48hrs after the last symptoms. Arrival & collection Please arrive between 09.50 - 10.00 for registration each day. Please collect your child/young person by 4pm unless you have given your consent for them to travel on their own. If you’re likely to be delayed after your expected time, please call Holly Morris, VDT's General Manager on: 07525 233965 so we can let your child/young person know
