What we'll do

Our Bushcraft session is the perfect place for young people to get together and have some fun in the woods. You will have the opportunity to use various tools and equipment to make Easter themed decorations out of locally sourced wood; Have a go at whittling some wood with a knife or learn how to create and light a fire. Alternatively you may want to learn how to put up some tarpaulins to make a shelter or collect materials to make your own a den. We will also be making things out of paracord such as bracelets and keyrings. All activities are tailored to the young people involved. We will all help prepare and cook lunch on the campfire. There will be lots to do but if you need a rest there will be hammocks up where you can chill out. We will finish the day toasting marshmallows for s’mores over the campfire.

Alison·Forest School Assistant and Founder
I was introduced to Forest School by my partner, Sharon, when she started working in this field. Initially I would help her set up for her sessions. My role gradually grew as I started to help out at the sessions as well as working behind the scenes doing the admin. The more I got involved the more I saw first hand how so many people benefited from the sessions. In 2021 Sharon and I started Portsmouth Forest School CIC and our aim is to help people of all ages access and enjoy the benefits of being outdoors. I am now hooked and keen to learn more so have just started my Forest School training so I can help Sharon deliver more programmes in the future.
Sharon ·Forest School Leader
My passion to become a Forest School Leader was ignited through my work in horticulture with young adults with learning disabilities. Once introduced to the concept I was immediately smitten with the ethos that put the individual firmly at the centre of the process. What impressed me was how the process focused on the individual, looking at their needs and desires but also their innate motivation to learn and develop given the right opportunities, environment and encouragement. I was really impressed by how the process allowed learners the freedom to choose their own path. Supported them to grow and develop for themselves facilitating the time and space to explore; all the while enjoying themselves and having fun in the outdoors. I have a 20 year history working in social care with a variety of client groups with additional needs. I currently work part time as a Deputy Director at Chichester Forest School delivering Forest School to children and young people of all ages. I have been qualified since 2018 and have run groups at Hilsea Lines since then. In 2021 I co-founded Portsmouth Forest School with my partner Alison. Children these days don’t spend as much time outdoors with the freedom to roam that I had as a child. Through my Forest School sessions I want to rectify this and encourage children to get outdoors and experience the joys of the natural world around them. I want to improve their health, promote their happiness and help them learn new skills. I want to see them gain in confidence, become independent, enjoy a sense of achievement and gain the ability to become more resilient. However, Forest School and being in the outdoors doesn’t just benefit children, it benefits everybody. My mission with Portsmouth Forest School CIC is to get people of all ages outside enjoying the natural world and observing the flora and fauna on their doorstep. I have decided to become a social enterprise, hopefully a charity because I want everybody to enjoy the benefits that nature can offer. All profits from the business will be re-invested in services to ensure those who are most disadvantaged get access to the benefits that nature has to offer. Now that I’ve started my Forest School CIC, I’m looking to recruit adults, children and their families who share these goals and want to learn, grow and develop with me, whilst enjoying the great outdoors.
