About your mentor
Annabel at Actively Safe
Self defence and personal safety trainer
Hi, I'm Annabel, founder of Actively Safe. I haven't always worked in the self defence industry - for 14 years I worked in international corporate tax! However, when I became a mum for the first time in 2013 I knew that it was time for something new. Martial arts has always been an important part of my life. As a teenager, I regularly kick boxed. For the last 5 years I have been focusing on training in an Indonesian Silat, and very recently I have taken up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Through training in martial arts I began to develop an understanding of what would and wouldn't 'work in real life' situations. This led me to study and qualify with the National Federation of Personal Safety, gaining my Level 3 self defence instructors qualification. As a parent myself I want what is best for my children, and I consider their safety to be a fundamental priority. As our children become more independent and leave the relatively sheltered environment of home and school, where they can explore boundaries and make mistakes, it is important that they have the required life skills to effectively manage their safety. These days, I am really lucky to work with a range of people, from children, to teenagers and adults, addressing issues that they consider important to their personal safety. Whether it be safety concerns about having to travel for work or lone working; walking the dog; or the risks that come with peer pressure and bullying. I love working with people and seeing their self confidence grow. I strongly believe that life is for living to the full and making the most of opportunities. I personally love to travel and explore new places and cultures. I do not believe in constantly being on edge and worrying about what may/may not happen. Personal safety is about believing that you are worth keeping safe, and being prepared not paranoid.
