A summary

Ever wanted to write a song? We will be working in small groups to share ideas and inspire us. You will learn techniques and skills to write a song. Suitable for all abilities, with or without musical skills. Have some fun, share ideas and get to know and express yourself. Great for both those who love poetry and for those who are not confident with words. This is a course of 3 sessions. We hope to run a further three sessions in the summer (time and venue to be confirmed with students). There will be an opportunity to perform at EggTooth's The Nest in the Old Town of Hastings on Tues 23 August, 6pm. The session will be led by experienced songwriter Mike Willis. “I’m generally not a social person, I don’t have many friends, so it’s just nice to maybe connect with people a bit through these courses. I think it’s actually improved my social-ness, if that makes sense! I’ve always just been absolutely rubbish at socialising, and I think that now I’m able to read out my songs in front...

Jenny Lozano·Hastings Thrives Programme Co-ordinator
I co-ordinate programmes for Hastings Thrives. The course is run by Mike Willis who writes: I was born in Atlanta and began singing professionally at the tender age of 8. While in high school I began playing guitar and writing songs. After High School, I studied Songwriting and Production at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. My education ended early so that I could begin touring in support of my first and second albums. After close brushes with “making it” in LA, NY, and Atlanta, I moved to Nashville to focus more purely on Songwriting. Within six months of my arrival in Nashville, I was writing with hit songwriters and entertaining offers from Music Row Publishers - eventually I signed as a staff songwriter with Scott Hendricks at Big Red Tractor (Warner Brothers Music) and then two years later I moved to Better Angels Music Publishing. During my time as a Staff Songwriter I wrote over 600 songs, and produced more than 100 song demos. I also toured extensively across the US, UK and China with various bands. The highlights: 1.) Winner of International Songwriting Competition Country Category 2.) Eddies Attic Songwriter Shootout Winner 3.) Performed solo on Ryman Stage (Home of Grand Ole Opry) 4.) Songs recorded by artists in Canada and on Canadian Country Chart. 5.) Winner of ASCAP Foundation Award and asked to Perform at the Ceremony in NYC.
