A summary

I am offering to run a 4-week starter course of 1-hour English lessons in Forest Row for Ukrainian families, to support and ease the transition of moving to this area. I will design the course depending on the ability and needs of the group. A limited number of children under 11 may accompany their parents free-of-charge and remain their responsibility. Exact location to be confirmed. If the times suggested do not suit, please message me to express your interest.

Beth Hart·Dedicated, inspiring, responsive
I have loved History and languages from an early age thanks to my parents' stories and inspiration, and the freedom they gave me to roam Europe from my mid-teens... plus some very good teachers at school and university. I finished school with 5 x A-grade A-levels in History, French, Latin, Italian (and General Studies!) and studied (mostly) Russian History and Russian Language & Literature at the University of Nottingham (First Class with Distinction in Oral Russian). I spent many summers living with French and Italian families and exploring the wider world, and my year working and studying in Russia opened my eyes to the friendships which are possible between ordinary people of all cultures. While at university I voluntarily taught basic English to two recent immigrants to the UK and, following this, achieved my Certificate in Teaching English to Adults (CELTA). I tutored Russian school children as well as teaching classes at an English school in Moscow and after graduation went out to China with VSO, where I taught English Language and British History to Chinese undergraduates at a rural campus in inland China... also adding basic Mandarin to my repertoire of languages. After some years working in Central London, I trained as a History teacher (PGCE Secondary History) and worked in an 11-18 school, teaching up to A-Level, until I had children of my own. Despite my world travels and academic achievements, I have learnt most about life and humanity from raising my three children! During this period, to add to my skills I have taken part in many School of Storytelling courses at Emerson College, have attended a Non-Violent Communication weekend and have participated in several women's circles. With all these experiences in the mix I hope to offer tuition and group teaching which is sensitive, attuned and student-focussed yet still comes with high expectations and academic rigour.

Our curriculum

The course will be tailor-made, taking into account the existing abilities and the needs of the students. These could include: - At beginner level, an introduction to the sounds and alphabet of the English Language. - Conversational English for various scenarios: Socialising; Families; Shopping; Getting help; Travel - Extending vocabulary: Schools; Workplaces; the Home; Daily rhythms - Grammar to suit the level of the learners: sentence structure; tenses; forming questions

Learning aims

To improve English conversation skills.

Final word!

I intend for classes to be held entirely in English, however I can speak and understand other languages: Russian, French and Italian. If there is group consensus, I would be willing to employ my Russian in order to aid understanding, particularly if there are young learners and if the Latin Alphabet needs to be taught.
