What we'll do

This structure is a Bindfulness favourite. It lays flat, opens beautifully, and allows for endless design variation. The finished book, with its modern lines and flush covers, feels wonderful in the hand. The modern Sewn Boards Binding, a sewn and glued soft cover book, is credited to Gary Frost. It is an elegant structure that has an additional section of card or heavier paper sewn onto the text block that is incorporated into the cover of the book. You will learn (or revisit) beginning bookbinding techniques, using unsupported sewing to bind your book.  We will look at the importance of paper grain and how to fold, sew, and cover your book. All materials will be provided for your afternoon of making, including paper, card, various decorative papers, linen thread and adhesive to make your own uniquely designed books. Tools are provided for use on the day. Coffee, tea and biscuits, and lunch are included in this morning workshop in a beautiful rural setting. You’ll take away your u...

Hope Fitzgerald·Bindfulness with
Bindfulness was established 2018, and brought my work making handbound books and leading bookbinding workshops together. I have been an artist for my entire adult life, working in a wide range of materials, including mixed media, installation work, photography, videography. I completed my MA in Fine Art in 2009 followed by a Post Graduate teaching qualification in 2012. This structured learning greatly enhanced my workshop delivery skills, which has been my preferred way of teaching ever since. I have worked with Primary and Secondary Schools in Kent and Essex as an artist since 2009, devising creative activities that were responsive to both curriculum aims and participants ideas. Books have always featured in my work - passing on my fascination with the book is always a pleasure.

Learning aims

In the workshop you will learn about: The selection of materials, Paper grain, Sewing techniques, Cover preparation, and the names of some common bookbinding tools and how to use them safely. Classes are taught through practical demonstrations and supported hands on work.
