When you arrive
When you arrive in Cwm Penmachno I’ll do a kit list check, and check everyone is up for some fun! Check we all have food, drink and happy faces! There will be a chance to buy extra food and drink supplies in the village before we start walking. We will meet at swallow falls cafe, pentrefoelas, LL24 0PN at 1pm. We can then go in convoy to Cwm Penmachno. We aim to be back by 3pm on the Sunday, however this is flexible and weather dependant. In case of very high winds the location may change slightly, but meeting point will stay the same. If you are booking for 2025, an email will be sent to you in January with itinerary and kit list. I’ll also create a WhatsApp group.
About your mentor
Jan
Mud, sweat and fun!
My name is Jan Phillips, I am qualified mountain leader, I qualified in 2017 after many years before hiking in North Wales. I used to be a running coach too and had my own running club before the pandemic. I love getting people out in the hills, it is both a great way of keeping fit and blowing away the cobwebs! I grew up on a sheep farm in North Wales and have always loved the great outdoors. My parents were keen hikers too, my first time up Snowdon was at age 8 months in the baby carrier! I also work in the NHS in community dental services specialising in special needs, sedation and urgent care as a dental nurse.
Wild camp in Wales
Ever wanted to camp under the stars in the mountains? Now's your chance! This is suitable for beginners and seasoned wild campers. You will need a good level of fitness as the hike will be hard and hilly and be able to carry all your kit. Along the walk you will see old mining villages and workings and hear some interesting history about Welsh mining. We always have fun on Love her Wild adventures and great friendships and memories are made! The area we will be visiting also has the famous Welsh mountain railway and skate caverns with zip slides, so why not stay on for a few days afterwards and enjoy what the area has to offer! If anyone is really wanting to do this adventure and is struggling for kit for the camp, contact Fran Pearson from Love her wild, she has a mountain of spare equipment! So don’t let this stop you! Kit list: Tent Sleeping mat Sleeping bag Pillow (or you can use your spare jumper) Rucksack large enough to carry everything (60-70 litres) Stove for cooking 1 litre of water (more can be boiled for drinking etc) Food, enough for evening meal and breakfast and lunch the next day Plus snacks Hat and gloves Spare socks Thermals for sleeping in (or leggings and a t shirt that can double up as spare walking clothes) Waterproof coat Waterproof trousers Walking boots (preferably with ankle support) Blister plasters Painkillers Extra fleece jumper Mobile phone Head torch plus spare batteries Toiletries A book or pod cast is advised as it’s a long night if you can’t sleep! Accommodation before and after the wild camp is not included, there are plenty of places to stay in and around the area. Alcohol is to be kept to a minimum. Be prepared to ‘wild wee!’ (Bring supplies in order to bury a ‘number 2’ if needed or carry out in a seal proof bag.) If you would like any more information or to ask any questions before booking I can be contacted on 07826558668, via WhatsApp or via email hairymountaingoat@gmail.com When you have booked, an email will be sent to you with further details, so please check your email address is correct.
