About your mentor
Play Torbay
Helping all children to play outdoors
At Play Torbay, our aim is simple… We provide fun, accessible play opportunities all year round including playground adventures, play days and special events. Play is the single most important developmental process in any child’s life and a fundamental human right. We raise awareness about the importance of play in children’s lives by actively involving parents and the wider community in the wonderful benefits of play. We are a small charity supporting and encouraging children to play and be active outdoors. We provide adventure, friendship, and fun for hundreds of children each year. ‘We believe that play is a fundamental right of childhood and is central to children and young people’s wellbeing and development’ General Comment 17, UNCRC School age children and their families are the beneficiaries of our work. We particularly support children from disadvantaged communities and those affected by adverse childhood experiences. Outcomes More children playing actively outdoors Whole families taking part in activities supporting well-being Young people developing key life skills, confidence, self-esteem, independence and resilience Developing a sense of community through meetings, friendships, volunteering and training Free, accessible play resources helping to lessen effects of poverty
Learning aims
Aim 1
Not all children enjoy organised games so we actively encourage free play activities at both sites where there is good access to the outdoors.
Aim 3
Free play helps build strong bones and muscles, improves balance and coordination, and develops both fine and gross motor skills
Aim 2
Play is crucial for physical development, contributing significantly to a child's movement skills, overall health, and well-being.
Aim 4
Access to play and be in beautiful green and natural spaces.
