A summary
FULL DAY FOREST SCHOOL 10am - 3pm READ BELOW FOR A DESCRIPTION OF EACH DAY: Forest School summer clubs are for every child: the wild ones, the quiet ones, the crafty and the muddy ones. We create fun, nurturing experiences children aged 5-11 to play, relax and learn in this special natural space together in Cheshunt. The venue is completely private and separate from Brookland Infants school, and we use this space weekly for forest school sessions for up to 150 children a week. It is very loved. We’ll start with a fun game and introductions. We’ll make sure each child begins to settle and has a friend. We’ll play some nature team games like hide and seek, predator v’s prey or a scavenger hunt before introducing the theme (see Days’ themes, below). There are always physical options available, like balancing on a slackline, playing in the mud kitchen, building a den or swinging on the rope swing. For those children who enjoy craft, we always have a nature based craft available too, in line with the day’s theme. Every day we’ll finish with a cosy fire, toast a marshmallow each and reflect on our experiences in nature from the day. At 14:55-15:00 we’ll reunite you with your wildling! DAY 1 - shelters , Spinners (make your own from a wood slice) and Clay Play PM: We’ll share the secrets of rope ladders and tree swings, so that you can make your own in the woods! Day 2 - Woodland Games, camo paint, get to know the TREES, make woodland jewellery. PM: Delve into the Wood Wide Web and get to know mushrooms. Go on a treasure hunt and make your own fungi from clay and found objects. Day 3 - Tie Dye! Bring your own white cotton top/shirt or socks and we’ll tie dye them using natural dyes (blackberries and elderberries) If we forage enough berries we’ll make a simple crumble on the fire - yum! PM - It’s all about minibeasts and habitats. Find out who calls this space their home, observe all kinds of insects on a minibeast hunt, then help create some minibeast hotels to encourage abundant biodiversity.

About your mentor
Jude @ Be Free Forest School
Be wild, be adventurous, Be Free
Founder, facilitator and lifelong learner at Be Free Forest School. I was lucky to have grown up spending much of my childhood outdoors, feeling brave and curious. I discovered Forest School when my children were babies, it was my escape to a simple, outside life where our interactions were uncomplicated. At the time I was a primary teacher, but I knew there was more I could offer to encourage resilience, creativity and a love for learning, some children just weren’t succeeding in a classroom environment. So I left the classroom to establish Be Free and never looked back. Nature offers us a living example of the characteristics I believe create success in life – adaptability, patience, strength and love for oneself and others. I have a passion for a programme which is learner focused, develops wellbeing, eco consciousness, and is informed by nature and the Forest School pedagogy.
What you'll need
- please bring a packed lunch, breadsticks and fruit are provided (by us) for snack. Please bring enough water for the whole day, two bottles if necessary. No nuts - thanks :o) - clothes: OK to get dirty, long sleeved and long trousers even if it’s very warm, the temperature is a good 5 degrees lower under the trees, and covered skin will help prevent biting insects. Please bring Jackets just to be sure - rain sometimes appears despite a dry forecast. - hats please, and sun screen applied before you come - you may choose to apply insect repellant, or an insect repellant patch, before you come. - DAY THREE, those attending WHOLE DAY only, please bring a white t shirt or top to tie-dye, something you already have is fine - we’ll give it a make over. We will provide pillow cases for those who don’t bring something white with them.
Our values
At Be Free Forest School, we believe that connecting people and nature has huge benefits. The research backs up what we see in our every day experience too. Playing in nature helps us be more adventurous, empathetic, independent, in tune with ourselves and the natural world, and feel free. We are a team of women who care hugely about kids, we love their ideas, adventures and stories, and recognise the privilege of facilitating magic-memory-making. We value using natural materials, protecting wildlife, plants and planet, respect and kindness.
